How to Get Tree Sap Off Skin (and the Sap That Burns a Day Later)

You brushed against a pine trunk, or carried the Christmas tree in, or leaned on a picnic table under a conifer. Now there is a patch of amber glue on your hands that soap slides straight off, that gets stickier the more you rub, and that has already collected two pine needles and a piece of lint.

Rubbing alcohol takes it off in about a minute. That part is easy. The part almost every guide leaves out is that “tree sap” covers three chemically different substances, and one of them causes no pain at all when it touches you and then blisters like a burn a day later, in sunlight.

Tree Sap Is Three Different Problems

Search results for this treat every sticky tree secretion as one substance. They are not. Three different things get called sap, and only the first one is the harmless nuisance most people are dealing with.

  • Conifer resin. Pine, spruce, fir, cedar. Amber, thick, aggressively sticky, and chemically a mixture of resin acids and terpenes. It is not toxic, it does not burn, and alcohol dissolves it. This is the common case and it is a two-minute job at worst.
  • Phototoxic sap. Fig, giant hogweed, wild parsnip, cow parsnip, citrus rind, rue. These contain furocoumarins. On their own they do nothing. Add ultraviolet light and they cause a chemical burn that appears eighteen to twenty-four hours later, long after you have forgotten touching the plant.
  • Caustic sap. Manchineel, and the milky latex of spurges such as Euphorbia. These damage skin on contact and are genuinely dangerous near the eyes.

The removal method is broadly the same for all three: get it off the skin. What changes completely is what happens next. For conifer resin, nothing happens next. For the other two, the removal is the least important thing you do.

Why Soap Fails and Alcohol Works

Conifer resin is mostly resin acids — abietic acid, dehydroabietic acid, pimaric acid — carried in a thinner fraction of volatile terpenes. When a tree is wounded, the terpenes evaporate off and the resin acids left behind harden. That is why fresh sap is runny and week-old sap is a solid amber lump.

Those resin acids are essentially insoluble in water. Soap and water cannot dissolve what water will not touch, so scrubbing at sap in the sink only warms it, smears it wider and works it into the fingerprint lines. Hot water actively makes it worse, because warming the resin softens it and helps it spread.

Resin acids are readily soluble in alcohol. That is not a household hack, it is how the substance is handled industrially: pine resin is processed into rosin, and rosin is redissolved in alcohol for varnishes and adhesives. Pouring isopropyl alcohol onto sap does the same thing on a much smaller scale, and it works within seconds.

This is the single most useful thing to know here, and it is where sap differs from most other things that end up stuck to skin. Road tar and beach tar are petroleum hydrocarbons and come off with cooking oil. Candle and depilatory wax is the same story. Sap is a plant resin, not a hydrocarbon, and alcohol beats oil on it every time. Reach for the wrong one and you will spend twenty minutes on a two-minute job.

Pine tar sits awkwardly between the two. It is made by heating pine wood, so it is a resin that has been part-converted into something more tar-like, and it responds to either. Alcohol first is still the faster route.

The Alcohol Method, Step by Step

Assume ordinary conifer resin on hands or forearms. Total time is a couple of minutes.

  1. Do not run it under the tap first. Water does nothing except spread the sap and wet the skin, and alcohol works less well on wet skin. Start dry.
  2. Soak a cotton pad, paper towel or cloth in isopropyl alcohol. Standard 70 per cent rubbing alcohol from a pharmacy is ideal. An alcohol-based hand sanitiser has the same active ingredient and works nearly as well, which matters because there is usually one in a bag or a glovebox.
  3. Press and hold for thirty seconds. Do not scrub yet. Give the alcohol time to get into the resin. You will feel it go from tacky to slippery, and that is the signal.
  4. Now rub, in one direction. The sap will come away onto the pad in dark smears. Use a clean part of the pad on each pass so you are not putting it back.
  5. Repeat on what is left. Thick lumps take two or three rounds. Do not try to force it in one go — picking at hardened resin pulls skin.
  6. Wash with soap and warm water. This is where soap finally earns its place: it removes the alcohol-and-resin residue the pad left behind.
  7. Moisturise. Alcohol strips the skin barrier along with the sap, and skin left dry and cracked is more prone to irritation from the next thing it touches. Any ordinary hand cream will do.

If there is no alcohol anywhere, oil is the fallback. Butter, olive oil, peanut butter or petroleum jelly will all soften resin eventually — they work by a different route, loosening rather than dissolving it — but expect five to ten minutes and more rubbing, and expect to need soap afterwards to get the oil off.

Turpentine deserves a note, because the suggestion turns up constantly and it sounds authoritative. Turpentine is distilled from pine resin, so of course it dissolves pine resin. It is also one of the better-known causes of allergic contact dermatitis in people who work with it, and using it repeatedly on bare skin is precisely how that sensitisation happens. Rubbing alcohol does the same job with none of that history.

The Sap That Burns You in Sunlight

This is the section that matters, and it is the one that is missing almost everywhere.

Some plant saps contain furocoumarins, also called psoralens. These compounds are harmless sitting on skin in the dark. Expose them to ultraviolet light and they react with the DNA in skin cells and destroy them. The result is called phytophotodermatitis, and clinically it is a chemical burn: redness, then blisters, then a brown stain that can last for months.

What makes it dangerous is the delay. There is no sting, no itch and no warning at the moment of contact. In a 2021 case published in Cutis, a 27-year-old man developed a blistering rash across his neck and arms eighteen to twenty-four hours after trimming giant hogweed without covering up. By the time the skin reacts, the connection to the plant is long gone, which is why these cases are so often misdiagnosed.

Manchineel and the Saps That Burn on Contact

The manchineel tree grows along the sand-and-vegetation boundary of Caribbean beaches, and also in south Florida and the US Virgin Islands. Every part of it is toxic. Contact with the sap causes severe irritant dermatitis and, if it reaches the eyes, keratoconjunctivitis. Eating the fruit can be fatal. Sheltering under one in the rain is enough, because the run-off carries the latex down onto you.

The rash appeared as clusters of pustules centred on hair follicles, a biopsy showed blistering within the epidermis with destruction of the follicles, and complete resolution took six weeks. The practical version for a traveller: in the Caribbean these trees are often marked with a red band or a warning sign. Do not shelter under an unfamiliar beach tree during rain, and do not pick up unidentified small green fruit from the sand.

Garden spurges — the Euphorbia family, which includes a great many ornamentals — bleed a milky latex that is a much milder version of the same idea. Under and around the nails is the fiddly part. Soak the fingertips in a shallow dish of alcohol for a full minute rather than wiping, then use a wooden orange stick or the folded edge of a paper towel — not a metal tool, which will tear the skin under the nail plate. If sap has hardened around a cuticle, petroleum jelly left on for ten minutes softens it more comfortably than repeated alcohol does.

Hair is the case where you should ignore the alcohol advice completely. Alcohol on the scalp is drying and it stings, and hair roughens as it dries out, which makes the sap grip harder. Children and Sap

Children get sap on themselves constantly, and they get it in worse places: faces, eyelids, hair, mouths. Three adjustments.

  • Use oil first, not alcohol. It is slower and it is far gentler, and a child will not sit still for thirty seconds of alcohol on stinging skin anyway. Butter, olive oil or petroleum jelly all work.
  • Never near the eyes, with either agent. Sap on an eyelid is a job for a warm wet cloth and patience, or for a doctor if it is on the lid margin.

But if you get an itchy, scaly, persistent rash on the hands after regular contact with pine — forestry, tree work, violin playing, frequent use of adhesive dressings — colophony allergy is a real and testable diagnosis, and patch testing is how it gets confirmed. It is not something to self-diagnose, and it is not something to ignore either.

What Never to Do

  • Petrol, diesel, paint thinner or brake cleaner. They dissolve resin. They are also absorbed through skin, strip the barrier badly, and are flammable while you are covered in them. There is no situation where these are the right answer for sap.
  • Turpentine or white spirit. The specific problem here is sensitisation. Turpentine is a recognised cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and repeated skin contact is exactly how people acquire it.
  • Hot water and scrubbing. Heat softens resin and helps it spread. Scrubbing works it into the skin and inflames it. This combination is why some people end up with a bigger sticky patch than they started with.
  • Picking at hardened resin. It bonds to the outer skin layer and pulls it off. Soften first, always.
  • Alcohol on broken skin, faces or eyelids. Use oil there and accept that it takes longer.
  • Assuming it is harmless because it did not hurt. Phototoxic sap is painless on contact. That is the entire problem with it.

The bottle of rubbing alcohol in the bathroom cabinet is as good as anything sold for the purpose, and the hand sanitiser in your bag is nearly as good.

The thing worth carrying away is the reversal. Tar and wax come off with oil, because they are hydrocarbons. Sap comes off with alcohol, because it is a plant resin.
