
You walked across a freshly sealed car park in flip-flops, or you leaned on a warm railing, or you spent an afternoon on a beach with black smudges in the sand. Now there is a dark, sticky patch that soap will not shift and that seems to be picking up everything it touches.
This comes off with cooking oil in about fifteen minutes. But before any of that matters, there is one question that changes everything, and most guides skip it entirely.

Tar on Skin Is Two Different Problems
Two very different situations share this one search, and they need opposite responses.
- Cold tar. Road tar picked up on the beach or in a car park, a smear from a sealed driveway, tar off a fence or a boat. This is a cleaning problem. Fifteen minutes, a bottle of oil, no drama.
- Hot tar. Roofing work, fresh paving, a spill from a kettle or a bucket. This is a burn, and the tar itself is the least urgent part of it. Treating it like a cleaning problem is how people make it much worse.
The chemistry is the same in both cases and it is worth thirty seconds of your time, because it explains why the answer is oil and not soap.
Tar, bitumen and asphalt are all petroleum-derived. They are heavy hydrocarbons: non-polar, which is the technical way of saying they have no interest in water. Soap and scrubbing get nowhere because water and tar repel each other no matter how hot the tap runs. Oil is also non-polar, so it mixes with tar readily, softens it, and lifts it off the skin. That is the whole mechanism.

Start Here: Was the Tar Hot?
Answer this before doing anything else.
Bitumen is solid at room temperature and only becomes molten and spreadable at around 93 degrees Celsius. Roofing tar and asphalt are typically heated to about 232 degrees Celsius to get them thin enough to spray or pour. Road paving runs cooler than that but is still far above anything skin tolerates.
So if the tar arrived molten, a burn has already happened underneath it, whatever the skin looks like right now. If it was solid when it met you, it did not.
- Cold and solid, no pain — a cleaning job. Go to the oil method.
- It was hot, or the skin hurts, or it is red and blistering — a burn. Go to the hot tar section and cool it first.
The Oil Method, Step by Step
For cold tar. This is not a folk remedy dressed up as advice, and that is worth saying plainly: a 2018 review in the Journal of Dermatology gathered 127 published cases of asphalt on skin, sorted every removal agent anyone had tried into medicines, health-care products, foods and solvents, and concluded that mineral oils and ordinary edible oils are the best first choice on efficacy, safety, availability and cost together. The same review notes that the medicated ointments used before the 1990s often took half a day or more.
- Pick any oil in the house. Sunflower, olive, vegetable, baby oil, mineral oil, butter, margarine, petroleum jelly. Baby oil has its own write-up in the burns literature. None of them is meaningfully better than the others.
- Warm the area first if you can. A flannel run under hot water and wrung out, held on for thirty seconds. Warm tar softens and gives the oil something to work into.
- Work the oil in generously and leave it. More than feels sensible, then five minutes of patience. This is the step people rush and then conclude oil does not work.
- Wipe with a dry cloth, not a wet one. A paper towel or an old rag takes the softened tar away with the oil. A wet cloth just smears it around.
- Repeat. Two or three rounds is completely normal on a thick patch. Each one takes off a layer.
- Wash with soap and warm water at the end, to remove the oil rather than the tar, then moisturise.
Expect fifteen to thirty minutes for a decent smear. If you are an hour in and fighting, either the oil is not getting contact time or the patch is thicker than it looks and needs another round rather than more force.

Notice how far down the list the aggressive options sit, and that the top four are all things already in a kitchen or a bathroom.
Hot Tar Is a Burn, and the Tar Comes Last
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that matters. Hot bitumen burns are a well-documented injury: a ten-year review of 92 hospitalised patients found a mean age of just under thirty, burns averaging under four per cent of body surface, mostly on the hands and arms, and a mean hospital stay of ten and a half days. These are not trivial injuries and almost all of them happen at work.
The instinct is to get the tar off immediately. That instinct is wrong, for two reasons that are worth understanding rather than just obeying.
- The tar is doing a job. It cooled into a solid layer over the wound almost immediately, and at those temperatures it is effectively sterile. In place, it is a dressing. Pulled off in a hurry, it takes the burnt skin underneath with it and turns a partial-thickness burn into something deeper.
- Cooling matters more than cleaning. Heat keeps damaging tissue after contact ends, and cooling works straight through a layer of tar. There is no reason to remove anything before that is done.
- Cool running water, twenty minutes, tar still on. Cool, not iced. Start as soon as you can and keep going even if it feels excessive.
- Do not peel, pick, or pull. Nothing about this is improved by speed.
- Get it assessed if it is larger than your palm, blistering, on the face or hands or genitals, or if it is on a child. Hands are the most commonly burnt site and also the one where scarring costs the most function.
- Only then, oil. Once cooled and assessed, tar is softened off with the same oils above, slowly, over hours rather than minutes. Hospitals do exactly this.
If the tar is stuck over a burn and does not shift easily with oil, leave it. It will separate as the wound heals underneath.
Beach and Road Tar on Feet
The most common version of this problem and the least serious. Beach tar is weathered oil residue; car park tar is sealant that never fully cured in the heat. Both are cold, both are harmless, and both come off with oil.
Feet do have two quirks. The sole is thick and calloused, so it tolerates a firmer wipe and a longer soak than anywhere else on the body. And tar wedges between toes and around nail edges, where a cotton bud with oil on it beats a cloth every time.
Sit down, oil the whole area, leave it ten minutes, then work between the toes with a bud before wiping the flat areas. Trying to do it standing at a tap, in a hurry, is why this takes people three attempts.

Hands, Nails and Cuticles
Hands take the most tar and, in the burn statistics, the most damage. For cold tar they are also the easiest case: thick skin, fast turnover, and you can soak them in a bowl rather than chasing the patch with a cloth.
Fill a bowl with warm water, add a generous splash of any oil, and soak for ten minutes before you touch anything. Most of it will wipe away afterwards. What is left around the nail folds comes out with an oiled cotton bud, worked along the fold rather than dug underneath it.
Do not use a nail brush on it. Bristles push tar deeper into the nail fold and abrade skin that is about to be sore anyway. And resist the workshop solvents sitting on the shelf — see what never to do.
Tar in Hair
The hardest version, for a reason worth naming: skin sheds and carries a problem away with it over a few days. Hair does not. Whatever is in there stays until it is removed or cut out.
Saturate the affected strands with oil, more than seems reasonable, and leave it on for at least twenty minutes. Work from the ends toward the scalp, a small section at a time, sliding the tar down the hair shaft rather than trying to lift it off. Comb through with a wide-toothed comb, re-oil, repeat. Wash with a strong degreasing shampoo afterwards, twice.

Road Tar, Roofing Tar and Pine Tar

The one genuine exception in that table is pine tar from trees. It is a plant resin rather than a petroleum product, so rubbing alcohol breaks it up faster than oil does. Use alcohol first, then oil for the residue, then soap. Tree sap behaves the same way for the same reason.

What Never to Do
- Never use petrol, diesel, paint thinner, white spirit, turpentine or brake cleaner. They do dissolve tar, which is exactly why people reach for them. They are also absorbed through skin, defat the barrier badly, and several are flammable while you are covered in them. Oil does the same job with none of that.
- Do not pull hot tar off. Covered above, and worth repeating because the instinct is strong.
- Do not scrub with a brush or an abrasive pad. Tar smears rather than lifts, so you spread it over a wider area and take skin off at the same time.
- Do not use ice on a hot tar burn. Cool running water only. Ice causes its own tissue injury on skin that is already damaged.
- Do not put it off because it looks bad. Cold tar comes off more easily the fresher it is, and it will collect grit and lint in the meantime.
When It Needs a Doctor
Cold tar on intact skin never needs one. Hot tar frequently does.

- Blistering, or skin that looks white, waxy or leathery
- Anything on the face, hands, feet, genitals or across a joint
- Any hot tar burn on a child
- Tar in or near the eye, or in the mouth or airway

Cold tar is one of the easiest things on this list of household mishaps. It is a hydrocarbon, it dissolves in oil, and the bottle of sunflower oil in the kitchen does the job as well as anything sold for the purpose. Warm it, oil it, wait, wipe dry, repeat.
The thing worth carrying away is the split. Almost every guide to this treats tar as one problem, and it is two. Cold tar is fifteen minutes of patience.
