
Epoxy on skin arrives in one of two states, and they are different problems. Wet epoxy, still tacky from the mixing cup, is a ten-minute job with soap and a paper towel. Cured epoxy, the hard amber shell you notice the next morning, dissolves in nothing you own and leaves with the skin it is stuck to over a few days. Most of the misery with epoxy comes from treating the first like the second, reaching for acetone or vinegar, and driving the resin deeper into skin that would have simply washed clean.

Wet and Cured Are Two Different Problems
Epoxy is a two-part product. Nothing happens in either bottle on its own. The moment resin and hardener are mixed, a chemical reaction starts that turns two thin liquids into one solid, and it does that by linking every molecule to its neighbours until the whole mass is one continuous network. Chemists call the result a thermoset. The everyday translation is that there is a before and an after, and the line between them is the working time printed on the box, usually 5 to 45 minutes.
Before that line, epoxy is a sticky liquid that has not bonded to anything. It sits on the skin the way honey does. It comes off with soap because soap does what soap always does, surrounds the oily film and lets water carry it away. This is the easy case, and it is also the case where the most damage gets done, because people panic and reach for a solvent.
After that line, epoxy is a plastic. A cured drop on your knuckle is chemically the same material as the countertop it was meant for. Acetone works on super glue because super glue is made of separate chains that a solvent can slip between. A thermoset has no separate chains. There is nothing for any solvent to pull apart, which is why every “dissolve cured epoxy” method on the internet ends with someone scrubbing a raw patch of skin that still has epoxy on it. The only thing that removes a cured shell is the skin under it leaving, and that happens on its own in two to five days.
If that sounds familiar, it is the same story as original Gorilla Glue, which is a polyurethane thermoset and behaves identically once set. The two pages share a method for the cured case and differ on the wet one.
What Is in the Two Bottles
This matters because the two parts hurt skin in different ways, and the removal advice follows from it.
- Part A, the resin. In nearly every consumer epoxy this is a bisphenol A epoxy resin, often written DGEBA or BADGE on a safety sheet, sometimes thinned with a “reactive diluent” to make it flow. The resin is not caustic and does not sting. It is, however, one of the best-documented skin sensitisers in occupational medicine. A large Finnish review in Occupational Medicine describes epoxy compounds as a leading cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis, with the low-molecular-weight resin itself the main culprit and reactive diluents close behind.
- Part B, the hardener. Usually an amine. Amines are alkaline, and the stronger ones are corrosive enough to cause a chemical burn with prolonged contact. Hardener on skin stings and can leave redness that looks like a rash within minutes. That is irritation, not allergy, and it settles once the hardener is washed off. Hardeners are also sensitisers, though less often than the resin.
- Mixed, and curing. Both hazards at once, plus heat. The reaction is exothermic, which becomes important in the section on hot cups.
- Fully cured. Inert. Cured epoxy does not sensitise, does not burn and does not absorb. The problem with a cured shell is purely mechanical.
The practical consequence: with wet epoxy, the goal is to get it off without helping it into the skin, because every minute of contact with unreacted resin is a minute of sensitisation risk. Solvents are the enemy here, not the tool. Acetone, rubbing alcohol, paint thinner and vinegar all dissolve uncured resin, and a dissolved resin is a thinner, more mobile resin that crosses the skin barrier more easily. Epoxy manufacturers say this in their own safety guidance: never use solvents to take epoxy off skin. Soap is slower and it is the right answer.
Wet Epoxy: The Soap Method
For epoxy that is still liquid, tacky or rubbery. Start the moment you notice; inside the working time this is a five-minute job.
- Take the bulk off dry. Wipe with a dry paper towel, working from the edge of the spill inward so you are not spreading it. Throw the towel away. Do not use a cloth you will reuse.
- Wash with warm water and a lot of soap. Ordinary hand soap or dish soap, lathered for a full thirty seconds, rinsed, and repeated. Warm, not hot; hot water opens the skin and speeds absorption of anything still on it. Two or three rounds usually take it all.
- If it is still tacky, use a waterless hand cleaner. The citrus or pumice mechanic’s cleaners sold in hardware stores are made for exactly this. Rub in, wipe off with a paper towel, then wash with soap. This is the step manufacturers recommend in place of any solvent.
- Feel the skin, not just look at it. Uncured epoxy is clear. Run a dry fingertip over the area; if it drags or feels tacky, wash again.
- Moisturise. Three rounds of dish soap strip the skin. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser puts the barrier back, and a healthy barrier is the thing that keeps resin out.
- Change your clothes if any got on them. Epoxy soaks through fabric and holds against the skin for hours. A wet patch on a sleeve is a longer exposure than the original spill.
If you got hardener alone on your skin, the same steps apply, but move faster and rinse longer. Hardener is alkaline and it keeps working while it sits. Fifteen minutes of running water is not excessive for a large splash of hardener, and any area that is white, blistered or numb afterwards is a burn and needs a doctor.
Cured Epoxy: Nothing Dissolves It
For the hard drop you found the next day, or the shell on a fingertip that has already gone rigid. Accept the timeline first: two to five days, less on hands that get washed a lot, more on a heel or a knuckle. Everything here is a way of getting there sooner without hurting yourself.
- Soak in warm soapy water for ten to fifteen minutes. This does not soften the epoxy. It softens the skin under it, which is the layer that actually has to let go.
- Oil the edges. Coconut oil, olive oil, baby oil or petroleum jelly, rubbed into the border between epoxy and skin. Oil gets under the rim of the shell and helps it lift as the dead skin beneath separates.
- Work the edge, never the centre. Roll the shell gently with a thumbnail from one side. If an edge lifts, keep going. If it does not, stop; it is not ready, and forcing it takes living skin with it.
- On thick skin only, a pumice stone or a fine nail file can thin the shell so it flexes and cracks off sooner. Palms, fingertips and heels. Not the back of the hand, not a forearm, never a face.
- Repeat once a day. Most shells crack and come off in pieces on the second or third day, usually in the shower.
A cured drop in hair is the one case with no gentle answer. Hair does not shed the way skin does, so a shell around a lock of hair stays until that hair is cut or grows out. Cut it.

The UV resin row deserves a sentence more. 3D printing and craft resins are acrylates, the same chemical family as long-lasting gel nail polish, and a 2018 series in Contact Dermatitis reported a run of allergic contact dermatitis in people using gel nail kits at home, with the authors calling it the tip of the iceberg. A 2024 report in the same journal described a dental technician sensitised through 3D printing. Uncured UV resin on skin is handled like uncured epoxy, with the same ban on isopropyl alcohol, which is the standard bath for cleaning printed parts and exactly the wrong thing for the hands that pull them out. When the Cup Gets Hot
Curing epoxy makes heat, and heat makes epoxy cure faster, which makes more heat. In a thin layer spread over a tabletop the heat escapes and nothing happens. In a deep cup, a large pour or a mass left in the mixing pot, it does not escape. A pot of leftover epoxy can reach the point of smoking, and the plastic cup can soften in your hand. Fast-cure epoxies, the five-minute kind, do this more readily than slow ones.
- If a mass of epoxy on your skin feels hot, it is a burn first and a spill second. Get it off with a dry wipe immediately, then run the area under cool water for ten to twenty minutes, and only then think about the residue.
- Do not hold a hot cup to see what happens. Put it down on something that cannot burn, outdoors if it is smoking, and leave it.
- Prevent it by mixing only what you will use in the working time, and by pouring leftovers out in a thin layer on a scrap surface rather than leaving them in the cup.
The Rash That Comes Two Days Later
This is the part of the page that matters more than the removal, and it is the part almost nobody tells hobbyists.
Epoxy resin is a contact allergen, and a serious one. A Danish multicentre study in Contact Dermatitis followed people who had become allergic to epoxy and found that most had been sensitised at work, that the dermatitis was usually on the hands and often the face, and that a substantial share had to change or leave their job because of it. A Finnish analysis in the same journal, covering 15 years of occupational cases, found that the resin itself and the reactive diluents mixed into it were the main sensitisers, with hardeners a smaller contributor, and that the most common route was direct skin contact during mixing and application. That is the exact thing a hobbyist does at a kitchen table with bare hands.
It is not only a workplace problem. A study of general dermatology patients in Finland found epoxy sensitisation in people with no occupational exposure at all, from home renovation, boat repair and crafts. A 2023 case report describes someone who developed dermatitis on the face and eyelids from the fumes alone while making resin herbarium pieces at home, with no direct skin contact. Airborne exposure to uncured epoxy is enough, which is why the ventilation line on the box is not decoration.

Two things to know once it has happened. First, it does not go away: sensitisation to epoxy is lifelong, and “low-odour”, “non-toxic” or “food-safe” epoxies contain the same resin and will cause the same rash. Second, it spreads across the family. People allergic to epoxy resin frequently also react to the reactive diluents in thinned products, and sometimes to acrylates, so a UV resin is not a safe swap. A dermatologist can patch test and tell you which ones to avoid.

- Nitrile gloves, not latex and not vinyl. Epoxy resin permeates latex, and the thin vinyl gloves sold for food handling are worse. Nitrile is the standard in every epoxy manufacturer’s guidance. Buy a box, and change them the moment one gets resin on the outside, because a contaminated glove holds resin against your skin for the rest of the session.
- Long sleeves and no bare forearms. The forearm is the second most common site of epoxy dermatitis after the hands, because people lean on the work.
- Ventilation, even for a small pour. Airborne sensitisation is documented from hobby quantities. An open window and a fan pointing out.
- Paper towels and a bin within reach before you mix. The spill always happens when both hands are busy.
- Do not eat, drink or touch your face until the gloves are off and your hands are washed. Resin on a coffee cup is resin on your lip.
- Read the safety sheet once. Every epoxy sold has one, and it tells you which hardener you are dealing with and how caustic it is.
What Never to Do
- Solvents on wet epoxy. Acetone, alcohol, vinegar, thinner. They work in the sense that the resin moves, and that is the problem: it moves into you. Soap is slower and safer, and it is what the people who make epoxy tell you to use.
- Curing it on purpose to get it off. Holding a resin-covered hand under a UV lamp, or letting a thick blob set so it “peels off”, turns a five-minute soap job into a three-day shedding job and, in the UV case, adds a burn.
- Heat on cured epoxy. A heat gun, a lighter, boiling water. Epoxy softens somewhere above 150°F; skin burns well before that.
- Cutting or prying a cured shell off with a blade. There is no clean boundary between epoxy and dead skin. You will cut living skin.
- Reusing a rag that has epoxy on it. You are re-applying resin every time you wipe.
- Carrying on after a reaction because the project is nearly done. Each exposure after sensitisation is worse than the last, and the rash after the third one can put you off work for weeks.
When It Needs a Doctor
A cured drop on a knuckle never does. These do.
- Epoxy or hardener in an eye. Rinse with clean running water for at least fifteen minutes, holding the lid open, and go to urgent care or an emergency department with the bottle. Do not wait to see if it clears.
- White, blistered, numb or leathery skin after hardener contact or a hot cup: that is a chemical or thermal burn, whichever caused it.
- A rash that is spreading, weeping or blistering, or one on the face or eyelids, or one that is not settling after three days off the resin and using a pharmacy hydrocortisone.
- Any rash at all, once, if you intend to keep working with resin. Patch testing takes a week and tells you exactly which chemicals to avoid for the rest of your life, which is cheaper than finding out one project at a time.
- Wheezing, chest tightness or a persistent cough after working with epoxy. Respiratory sensitisation to epoxy compounds is documented and it does not improve with more exposure.
- A large area of skin, a child, or a swallowed amount of either part. In the United States, Poison Control is free at 1-800-222-1222, 24 hours a day.
The Verdict
Epoxy on skin is two problems wearing one name. Wet, it is a sticky liquid that soap removes in five minutes, and the only way to make it worse is to reach for a solvent, which thins the resin and carries it in. Cured, it is a plastic that nothing dissolves, and the only way to make that worse is to try: soak it, oil the edges, and let it leave with the skin over a few days.
