How to Get Permanent Marker Off Skin (and Whether It Is Dangerous)

A toddler found a Sharpie and decorated both forearms. Or you wrote a phone number on the back of your hand and it is still there three showers later. Either way, the word on the cap says permanent, and that is the word doing all the worrying.

It is not permanent on skin. It comes off with rubbing alcohol in a few minutes, and even if you did nothing at all it would be gone in two or three days. The one thing genuinely worth knowing is which markers are the exception, and what not to do when the ink is over a cut.

Is Permanent Marker on Skin Dangerous?

This is the question underneath most of the searches, especially the ones typed by a parent, so it goes first.

For an ordinary permanent marker, the kind sold for offices, schools and craft drawers, the answer is no. Poison Control’s guidance on pens and ink is that ink is considered non-toxic on the skin, may stain it, and can be washed off with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Their concern with pens is mechanical rather than chemical: a point pressed hard into skin can cause an infection. The ink itself is not the problem.

There is a stronger piece of evidence than that, and it is hiding in plain sight. Surgeons draw on patients with permanent markers before nearly every operation. Surgical site marking has been mandatory in most health systems since the mid-2000s, it is usually done with a non-sterile pen that has been used on many patients, and it has been studied precisely because that sounded alarming. In a 2008 trial in the ANZ Journal of Surgery, researchers marked one forearm of twenty volunteers with a non-sterile marking pen and left the other unmarked. Before skin prep, 1 of the 20 marked arms grew bacteria against 15 of the 20 unmarked ones, and after iodine prep neither side grew anything. Marking did not contaminate the skin. If anything the alcohol in the ink cleaned it.

So a child with marker on their arms has a cosmetic problem and nothing else. Two genuine exceptions are covered further down: industrial markers that contain xylene, and ink over an open cut, where the issue is not toxicity but a permanent mark.

Why It Is Called Permanent, and Why Alcohol Undoes It

A permanent marker is three things: a colourant, a resin that glues the colourant to whatever it lands on, and an alcohol solvent that carries both and evaporates in seconds. “Permanent” means the dried resin does not re-dissolve in water. That is the whole claim. It says nothing about skin, and it certainly does not mean the ink is bonded to you.

Two facts follow, and they are the entire method:

  • The resin was dissolved in alcohol once, so alcohol dissolves it again. That is why rubbing alcohol works, why hand sanitiser works, and why the folk remedies that work (hairspray, some sunscreens) all turn out to contain alcohol. It is also why water and soap on their own do almost nothing.
  • The ink only sits in the outermost layer of dead skin cells. That layer sheds continuously and is fully replaced in a matter of weeks, so a marker stain left alone is visibly fading by the next day and gone in two or three. Nothing that stays on the surface of skin is permanent.

That second point puts permanent marker in the same family as hair dye on skin and henna: it is a stain, not a coating, and the argument is only ever about speeding up something that would happen anyway. The Alcohol Method, Step by Step

Five to ten minutes for a hand or an arm. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol at 70 per cent is ideal; hand sanitiser is the same thing in a gel.

  1. Soak a cotton pad, not the skin. Pour alcohol onto a pad until it is wet through. Splashing it directly on skin wastes most of it to evaporation before it has done anything.
  2. Hold the pad against the mark for fifteen to twenty seconds. This is the step people skip. The resin needs contact time to soften. Wiping immediately just smears it.
  3. Wipe once, in one direction, with a clean part of the pad. Dissolved ink will transfer onto the cotton. Wiping back and forth pushes it around instead.
  4. Fresh pad, repeat. Two or three rounds clear most marks. Thick, heavily drawn areas may take four or five.
  5. Wash with warm soapy water. This takes off the loosened ink and the alcohol residue together.
  6. Moisturise. Alcohol strips the skin’s own oils along with the ink, and on a child’s forearm that turns into dry, itchy skin by evening. Any plain moisturiser reverses it.

If a faint shadow remains after four rounds, stop. It is stained dead skin and it leaves with the skin, usually by the following morning. More alcohol at that point only dries the skin without shifting the colour.

Children and Babies

Most of the people reading this are looking at a small child, so three things worth saying plainly.

  • Nothing needs to happen tonight. The ink is harmless and it fades on its own. If the alternative is holding down a screaming two-year-old to scrub an arm, waiting is the better medical decision as well as the easier one.
  • On arms, legs and hands, a little hand sanitiser rubbed in and wiped off is fine for children old enough not to lick it. For babies, use oil or a baby wipe and accept a slower result.
  • On the face, use oil or nothing. A child’s facial skin is thin and alcohol near the eyes stings badly. Coconut oil on a cotton pad, held and wiped, is enough. Keep the alcohol for the limbs.

Face, Lips and Near the Eyes

Alcohol is the wrong tool here for anyone, not only children. It stings, it dries the thinnest skin on the body, and the eyelid does not tolerate it at all.

  • Oil-based makeup remover, micellar water, or plain coconut or olive oil on a cotton pad. Hold for twenty seconds, wipe once, repeat.
  • Lips: oil or lip balm, wiped off with a tissue. Do not use alcohol or sanitiser on lips, where it is easily swallowed.
  • Eyelid: a baby wipe or a damp cotton pad, and otherwise leave it. It will be gone in a day or two and nothing you can safely apply there will be much faster.
  • Ink in the eye itself is uncommon because marker tips are dry, but if it happens, rinse with lukewarm water for fifteen minutes and have it looked at the same day if it is still sore afterwards.

Marker Over a Cut or Scrape

This is the one situation where marker ink can become genuinely permanent, and it is rarely mentioned.

Ink on intact skin sits in cells that are about to shed. Ink that gets into a wound sits in living tissue, and living tissue does not shed. A 2024 case report in Frontiers in Medicine describes a patient who developed blue-black lines along her eyelid incision two weeks after surgery. Under dermoscopy the pigment from the surgical marking pen had lodged in the skin at the incision, and the diagnosis was an iatrogenic tattoo. It had to be cut out. The authors’ recommendation to surgeons was to make sure the ink is cleaned off before the skin is opened.

For everyone else that translates to a short list:

  • If a child has drawn over a graze or a scab, do not scrub it. Rubbing works ink into the raw surface, which is the mechanism for a permanent mark.
  • Clean the intact skin around the cut with alcohol or oil as normal. Leave the cut itself alone. Ink on a scab leaves with the scab.
  • Do not put alcohol or sanitiser into the wound. It hurts, it does not help, and the ink is not an infection risk on its own.

The Exception: Industrial Markers

Everything above assumes an ordinary office or craft marker. There is a second category, sold for marking metal, glass, wet surfaces and shipping crates, and it is formulated differently.

Some industrial and older-formulation markers use xylene or similar aromatic solvents instead of alcohol. The tell is a strong, sweet, petrol-like smell, a label that says industrial, extra-large or “for metal and glass”, and sometimes a solvent warning in small print. Xylene is absorbed through the skin readily: a 2007 study of shipyard spray painters in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine measured skin loading of xylene and ethylbenzene across the body and concluded that dermal absorption was a major route of exposure, not a minor one.

A single mark from one of these on an adult’s hand is not an emergency. But the advice changes:

  • Wash promptly with soap and warm water, then oil for whatever remains. Do not chase it with more solvent.
  • Keep industrial markers out of the craft drawer entirely. The ordinary ones are safe around children; these are not.
  • Anyone using them all day should be wearing nitrile gloves, on the same reasoning as any other solvent job.

What Never to Do

  • Melamine sponges. They remove marker from a wall because they are an extremely fine abrasive. On skin they remove skin. This is the single most common bad idea on this topic, and it is often tried on children.
  • Bleach or bleach wipes. Bleach does not dissolve marker resin at all. The only thing it does to the mark is irritate the skin underneath it.
  • Acetone, paint thinner, white spirit. Harsher than alcohol and no more effective, because alcohol already does the job. Repeated solvent contact is a well-established route into irritant hand dermatitis; controlled repeat-exposure studies show the damage accumulates rather than resetting between exposures.
  • Scrubbing until the skin is red. The point at which the skin is red is the point at which you are no longer removing ink. What remains after that is stained dead skin that only time removes.
  • Alcohol on a baby’s face, on lips, or in a wound. Oil, a baby wipe, or nothing.

When It Needs a Doctor

Almost never, for the ink itself. The exceptions are all about what was done to the skin or what the marker contained.

  • A child who has swallowed more than a lick of ink, or any amount from an industrial marker: call Poison Control with the pen in hand.
  • Skin that is raw, weeping or blistered after removal attempts, particularly after a melamine sponge or a solvent.
  • Ink that has healed into a cut and is still visible a month later. This is a tattoo now, and removal is a clinic decision.
  • An eye that is still sore or red after fifteen minutes of rinsing.
  • A rash that keeps returning in someone who handles markers or solvents all day. That is occupational dermatitis, and it is treatable, but not by changing what you scrub with.

The Verdict

Permanent marker on skin is one of the least serious things on the whole list of household mishaps, and the word on the cap is the only reason anyone worries. It is non-toxic, surgeons rely on it, and it is gone in days by itself. Alcohol on a pad, twenty seconds of contact, one wipe, repeat. Then soap and a moisturiser.

The two things worth remembering are the exceptions. Ink that gets into a cut can stay for good, so never scrub a graze. And industrial xylene markers are a different product that happens to look the same, so read the barrel before you hand one to a child.
